How to Become a Desert Mermaid

We offer our introductory synchronized swimming program to all girls between the ages of 7 and 17. Open enrollment starts Monday, January 25th and we welcome all interested swimmers to join the Mermaids in a complimentary trial week. This program is an introduction to the sport, designed to introduce children to the techniques and the fun of synchronized swimming. Basic synchro skills such as counting music, sculling, eggbeater, beginning figures and land drilling are taught and the philosophy of teamwork is introduced.
The requirement for becoming a Mermaid is you must be able to swim 25 meters in deep water. One year previous swim team experience is helpful. There will be a readiness evaluation the first day of class.

After completion of the introductory session, all swimmers are invited to swim in the Mermaids Annual Water Show at the end of the Summer. The swimmers will be joined by the competitive teams as well as perform their own routine. The water show is performed for family, friends and community. After experiencing the fun of synchronized swimming, each swimmer will be able to continue to swim with our year round competitive teams.

After completing the Beginner's program with the Desert Mermaids, a swimmer can continue to swim year round with the competitive teams. This program focuses on the basic skills of the sport, while enjoying being on a team and having fun! The competitive program runs from September through the end of the competitive season, usually in late spring. Swimmers are categorized by age, which is determined by subtracting the swimmers birth year from the current year of competition.
There will be at least 2 meets that each team will participate in each year. Most of these meets are in Arizona or Southern California since the Desert Mermaids are the only competitive team in the state of Nevada. Each team perform their routine in a judged competition with other teams in their same age group and skill level.
